Previously announced a few weeks ago, Adobe today released a version of its Premiere video editing application for iPhone. Oh, it runs on iPad too.

Previously, Adobe had an app on the App Store called Adobe Premiere Rush, positioned as a simplified video editor aimed squarely at social media creation. At first glance, Premiere feels like a more advanced version of this app. Like its predecessor, this app is targeting today’s creators working in the social media space rather than the professional video editors that the desktop version of Premiere has long catered to.
Some of the improvements over Rush include support for “unlimited” tracks and for 4K HDR video. But the star of the show, so to speak, is Premiere’s integration with Adobe’s suite of generative AI tools, including:
- Enhance Speech for cleaning up voiceover audio
- Generative sound effects
- Adobe Firefly integration for generating assets
Adobe’s predatory subscription practices are the stuff of legends, but Premiere on iOS is free for the vast majority of its functionality. Where you’ll start having to pay is when you start using the AI features, which require you purchase credits for use.
And Then There’s the iPad Version

So yes, Adobe Premiere runs on iPad, but calling it “optimized” would be a pretty big stretch. There’s an iPad UI, which is something, but in practice it’s mostly just a blown-up version of the iPhone interface. In a world where we already have well optimized, full-featured editors like LumaFusion, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve, it’s hard not to be disappointed with what Adobe is offering here.
iPad users have wanted Premiere on iPad for years, but I don’t think this is what they had in mind. I only spent a couple minutes with the app and was immediately let down. For starters, there are no keyboard shortcuts—a big deal for video editors. I also noticed I couldn’t scroll the timeline with my mouse. Small things, but they go a long way toward making the iPad version feel like an afterthought. Well, that and the fact that Adobe’s marketing for this release doesn’t even mentions the iPad.
We’ve come a long way from “real Photoshop” on iPad.
Adobe Premiere for iPhone and iPad is available today from the App Store, with an Android version in development.
