Of all the strange things I expected to happen in 2025, a Snapchat app for watchOS was not one of them.

Anywho, as part of Snap’s continued expansion efforts that saw Snapchat come to iPad last year, version 13.44.0.45 of the Snapchat iOS app adds a native Apple Watch client.

According to Snap, the reason this app exists on Apple Watch is for chat, and more specifically, quickly replying to messages. The watchOS client allows you to view text-based messages and respond to them using one of the Watch’s many input methods (Scribble, voice, keyboard). You can’t use Watch app to view Snaps or any of the other fun stuff in Snapchat.

The Snapchat watchOS app exists as an app extension of the iOS app. While it would have been nice to see a completely standalone client, for the more focused experience Snap seems to be going for, this is certainly better than nothing.

It’s worth noting that for me, the Watch app seems to be stuck on a loading screen and is not displaying any of my conversations. This could just be a me problem, but I wanted to bring it up in case it’s an app issue.

Snapchat for Apple Watch can be installed via the on-device Apple Watch App Store or from the Watch app on your iPhone.
