The Apple Sports app for iOS recently received an update that added widgets not only for iPhone, but also for iPad and Mac. This is despite the fact that the Sports app itself is still only available as an iPhone app.
In an interview with Digital Trends, Apple’s head of product for sports, Craig Mahonchak, was asked about the possibility of an iPadOS version of Apple’s score-tracking app. He acknowledged the demand by saying,
“…we know iPad matters too, especially for fans who want a bigger view.”
The article notes that Apple is exploring ways to add more detail to the app for those who want it. To me, that suggests there won’t be an iPad version until they figure out what that looks like.
The Sports app is intentionally simple, and it seems Apple doesn’t just want to blow up the existing iPhone interface for iPad.
In the meantime, iPad users can continue to run the iPhone app in compatibility mode, or, with the new windowing features in iPadOS 26, run it in an iPhone-sized floating window.
