Apple just released the public version of iPadOS 27.2, and I noticed something interesting in the release notes.

There’s a line item that reads “Side-by-side multitasking is easier to set up with the option to choose a second app whenever you tile apps to the left or right with the window controls or menu bar.”

I don’t remember seeing this in the betas, so I decided to take it for a quick test drive.

When you have a single app on screen and you’re using Windowed Apps mode or Stage Manager:

  1. Move the app to one side of the display using the window controls or menu bar. The app will move off to the side of the screen, allowing you to select a second app.
  2. Select a second app, and iPadOS completes the side-by-side split

This seems to work only when you have a single app on screen, at least in my testing. If you see otherwise when you upgrade to iPadOS 27.2, let me know in the comments, and I’ll update the post.
