Google’s AI-powered note-taking and research tool, NotebookLM, was released today for both iPad and iPhone. Using Google’s Gemini AI capabilities, NotebookLM enables users to create collections of content called Notebooks that can contain PDFs, text, or even YouTube videos. This content is synthesized by AI, generating summaries and allowing users to ask questions against the synthesized data.
NotebookLM can also generate podcast-style Audio Overviews of your Notebook content. This feature includes background audio support, so you can listen while multitasking on other things. Overviews can also be downloaded for offline listening.
Not being a student, I haven’t had much of a use case for this tool, but after trying out Audio Overviews, I am legitimately impressed at its quality. It’s, of course, not perfect, but it’s very good. Well done, Google.
Good news, this app also passes the initial sniff test. It actually rotates on iPad.
Phew.
The app also supports standard iPad multitasking, meaning both Split View and Slide Over. This support means the app also properly resizes in Stage Manager. It does not support multiple windows.
You can subscribe to Google’s AI Premium tier, which offers additional features such as more Notebooks, through Apple’s In-App purchase system. However, at the time of writing, this feature loads an error page.
NotebookLM can be downloaded from the App Store, and requires iPadOS/iOS 17 or higher.
