Last month, Bombich software announced the release of Carbon Copy Cloner 7, the latest version of their popular Mac backup software. This release has a number of new features, but most interestingly is the addition of backup support for iPadOS and iOS. Sort of.
The architecture and policies around Apple’s mobile platforms preclude the developers from adding the full backup support they offer on the Mac. But what they can offer is support for backing up photos and locally stored files in the Files app. Backups can be stored on an external drive connected to a Mac running the latest version of their desktop app.
Would I love to see more? Absolutely! But this is likely the best that can be done within Apple’s restrictions.
Support for mobile backup is available as an in-app purchase per destination type, and requires the desktop app on macOS.
